Article on Christmas Parade

RLC Spreads the Good News in the Ooltewah Christmas Parade

RLC members paraded down Little Debbie Parkway and Apison Pike, beaming with Christmas cheer in this year’s Ooltewah Christmas parade.  This was the third year RLC has participated in the parade and each year our float and participation grows.  Compared to the rain and cold of last year, this year’s weather was great and we had plenty of hot chocolate and good spirits to keep us warm.

Our float expanded its candy cane theme. Terrie Castleman, Brian White, Eddie McCollum and myself walked, jogged, huffed and puffed along side the float (I think Eddie could have gone another 2 miles!!), giving out candy canes with the following message:

“The Candy Cane”
The shape of “J” reminds of us Jesus
White stands for the pureness of Jesus
Red represents the blood He shed to save us from sin

Musicians and singers included Dawn Johnson, Nancy Baxter, the Snell family, the Wenger family, Fran Balsis, Jon Lindberg, Peter, and Audrey Taylor.  Kim White and Jennifer Lindberg shuttled people to the float prior to and after the parade.  Jim Taylor went “high tech” this year, using walkie-talkies to communicate and renting a PA system to amplify the music and song.

The float is a trailer donated for use each year by John Cosgrove that was decorated at the White’s home the day before the parade.  Audrey told me that decorating the float “felt like a party” with goodies and treats supplied by the Whites.  The members used all their creativity skills to put together the best float ever, carrying the candy cane theme throughout.  Brian White created a beautiful wooden representation of our butterfly emblem and placed it on a candy cane pole.  Brian also created new signs for the float.  In addition to the folks who participated in the parade, Penny Sumpter, Gene Jung, Sandy McCollum and John Castleman, and Roland Witt helped create the float.

RLC is already planning to make the float and the message even better next year.  I hope you will be able to be with us next year when we share the wonderful feeling of the spirit of Christmas in the Ooltewah parade.
